I Never Realized I Need A Bluetooth Wallet

When a new Kickstarter launches for an each day item with (Bluetooth/NFC/WiFi/solar panels/CNC'd aluminium unibody — delete as proper) capabilities on board, I am ordinarily 1st in the line of jeering sceptics. But a wallet with built-in Bluetooth essentially makes a lot of sense. Pass the Kool-Help, please.

Woolet is a pretty classy-looking leather wallet with a Bluetooth chipset and a speaker constructed in. The idea is to buzz your phone if the wallet gets too far away, like if you've left it behind, or someone's stolen it. There's also the option to have your wallet make noise, so you can track it down in the disorganized mess that masquerades as a property office.

The only factor that provides me any trigger for hesitation is the project's description of self-charging batteries. According to the Kickstarter, that suggests either kinetic or physique-heat charging technologies, which means you are going to under no circumstances have to plug the wallet in. That is important — due to the fact, honestly, do you truly want to have to charge your friggin' wallet? — but it's also a difficult trick to pull off successfully. Nevertheless, Bluetooth 4. Low Power chips only need a sip of electrical energy to perform, so with any luck, it is an achievable aim.

At $99, it's a reasonable price for a leather wallet with some smarts. You can almost certainly make your personal version from a common wallet and a commercially obtainable Bluetooth fob, but there is one thing pleasantly simple about Woolet's integration. An individual cease me prior to I get into the three-D printing drones. [Kickstarter]

The Craziest Designs For London's Newest Pedestrian Bridge

The great city of London currently has something of a fascination with pedestrian bridges to span the waterway that bisects the city. The latest project is for a bridge that will connect Nine Elms to Pimlico in the Borough of Wandsworth. Currently, 87 proposals have been submitted: here are the craziest.

At the moment, the council is only releasing images of the proposed designs, leaving us in the dark about any material or cost details. Still, the bridge is meant to come in under $65 million. The design brief included an emphasis on accessibility to cyclists, hence the inclusion of ramps in many of the designs. The full gallery of 87 - from sensible renders to crazy back-of-the-napkin sketches - is over on the competition website. [NE Bridge Competition]

India favours Japan's bullet train tech

NEW DELHI -- Japan's "shinkansen" bullet train technology is the leading candidate for a planned 500km railway linking Mumbai and the state of Gujarat, the first step in India's extensive high-speed rail project.

The Indian and Japanese governments initiated a joint feasibility study in late 2013, with a final report to be released in July 2015.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency, which is participating in the study, will tell participants Saturday at a high-speed rail seminar in New Delhi that the report will likely conclude that Japan's bullet train technology is the most appropriate option.

A top official in India's Ministry of Railways told The Nikkei that Japan's technology is the world's best and that India hopes to work on this project with Japan.

The Japanese contingent planning to attend the seminar includes Issei Kitagawa, state minister of transport; Yuji Fukasawa, executive vice president at East Japan Railway, which hopes to win orders for the project as part of a consortium of Japanese companies; Tadaharu Ohashi, a counselor at Kawasaki Heavy Industries; and top Hitachi officials.

With construction likely to start as early as 2017, India and Japan will quickly work out the necessary details, such as fundraising, as soon as the study is complete. Plans included combining official development assistance from JICA with an infrastructure fund set up by Japan's transport ministry.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been working to revive the country's manufacturing industry with the "Make in India" initiative, probably will require that rolling stock be built locally. How much Japanese companies will cede to India's demands will be a point of interest.

The railway linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad will cost 700 billion to 800 billion rupees ($12.2 billion to $13.9 billion), with 12 stations to be built along the route, the Indian government said. The train will have a top speed of 320 kph, slashing travel time to around two and a half hours from about eight hours now.

India plans to build nine railways linking the major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, which has been dubbed the Diamond Quadrilateral project.

Since the Mumbai-Ahmedabad railway requires tunneling beneath a river, India favors Japanese drilling technology, which was used in projects such as the Seikan Tunnel linking Japan's main island with the northern island of Hokkaido. India also focused on Japan's safety record, with no passenger deaths in 50 years of operation, and know-how allowing trains to run at intervals of several minutes.

France, Spain and China also have shown interest in India's high-speed rail plans, and competition over the other routes likely will remain fierce.

India placed orders worth Rs 83,858 cr for military purchases from 2011 to 2014

NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force, Army and Navy have placed orders worth Rs 83,858 crore from 2011 to the last fiscal while domestic defence industries have earned Rs 69 crore by export of military hardware.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said foreign vendors got orders worth Rs 55,406 crore from IAF between 2011-12 and 2013-14 followed by Navy's Rs 25,454 crore and Rs 2,998 crore from Army.

Replying to questions in the Lok Sabha, Parrikar also said that Foreign Direct Investment amounting to Rs 24.36 crore has been received after government opened the defence industry for private sector.

"The expenditure on capital acquisition in respect of orders placed on Indian vendors and foreign vendors during the period 2011-12 to 2013-14 was 53.9 per cent and 46.1 per cent respectively," he said.

Giving details of efforts by the government to strengthen the domestic defence industry, he said a total of 144 companies have been issued licences and letters of intent for manufacture of military hardware in the last 14 years.

He said 29 joint ventures and FDI proposals have been approved while noting that the procedure for 'Buy and Make (Indian) and Make' categories of acquisition over 'Buy (global)' category to encourage Indian defence industry.

As per the new FDI policy in defence, foreign investment upto 49 per cent has been allowed through FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) route and beyond 49 per cent, with the Cabinet Committee on Security.

The Defence Minister said Indian private sector industry has also been allowed to receive Maintenance Transfer of Technology (MToT) in 'Buy (global)' cases.

He also said that an online system of receiving application for issue of NoC for export of military stores has been introduced besides formulating a defence export strategy.

Parrikar said during the last four years, NoCs for export of goods which are in the nature of military stores have been issued for many countries including Algeria, Nigeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sri Lanka, Paraguay, Japan, Afghanistan, Spain, Nepal, Belgium, Malaysia, Norwat, Romania and Port of Spain.

The NoC has also been issued for supply of such goods to Vietnam, France, UK, UAE, Bangladesh, Ghana, Sweden, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Egypt, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Israel, Republic of Korea, Macau, Oman, Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Uruguay, Canada, Russia, Tajikistan and Singapore among others, Parrikar said.

He said Indian defence sector earned Rs 46.08 crore by exporting military goods in 2011-12, Rs 5.62 crore in 2012-13 and Rs 17.74 crore in 2013-14.  The Defence Minister said in the last four years, orders have been issued debarring six firms along with their allied and subsidiary firms from business dealings with the Defence Ministry for a period of 10 years.

He said allegations of kickbacks and commissions are dealt with as per provisions of Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) and wherever necessary, the cases are referred to the appropriate agency including the CBI.

Replying to another question, he said a proposal to procure Medium Multi Role combat aircraft from French firm Dassault Aviation was under consideration and no agreement has been signed yet. India has been holding talks with Dassault for the nearly USD 10-billion deal for 124 Rafale fighter jets.

To a separate question, Parrikar said six Scorpene submarines are currently under construction at Mazgaon Dock Ltd, Mumbai, in collaboration with DCNS of France. He said no proposal has been received from Japan government for construction of submarines.

"The Defence Acquisition Council has constituted a Core Committee in December 2014 to identify suitable Indian shipyards for construction of submarines indigenously which is required to submit its report within three months," he said. - PTI

Motorola will let you customize your next smartwatch

Motorola's philosophy is that if you can't customize it, it probably isn't worth buying, which is why Moto Maker will soon let you tailor the Moto 360 to your individual taste. In an interview with Wired, the company's Dickon Isaacs said that the option to pick a case color, band material and size were always planned for the smartwatch, but had to be postponed for time reasons.

When Moto Maker is relaunched in March, users will be able to pick the color of their watch as well as the size and material of the strap. The case will be sold in a choice of black, silver or champagne gold, while the straps come in two sizes in leather or metal. In addition, users will also be able to pick one of 11 watch faces to appear as the default -- although you'll still be able to change this at your whim, naturally.

How to Get Rid of Swarming Gnats in Our Yard

A common sight in the spring and summer, the seemingly unprofitable and pointless habit of gnats to hover in a cloud is, in fact, the single most productive thing they'll ever do with their short lives.

Although there are a wide variety of non-biting, but eminently annoying, gnats and midges, their lifecycles are all pretty similar. Each begins as an egg, and, with some species, they lay thousands at a time.

When they hatch (after a period of no more than a week), each enters a larval stage (lasting anywhere from 10 days to 7 weeks), followed by a pupae stage that lasts another 3 to 20 days, and then each emerges as an adult. And this is when they swarm.

Fulfilling their biological imperative, gnats and midges (like many other insects) swarm in order to reproduce. When the moment is right, females take flight while secreting a sex hormone that attracts the males, who (like those from many species) can catch the scent even from a distance. The males seek out the female, swarming around her, trying to be "the guy," and, in the process, forming into the well-known ball. Yes, that ball of gnats you accidentally walked through was simply a group of insects trying to get it on.

Shortly after mating (and subsequent egg-laying), the lovers die.

Experts note that many insect species swarm, including colony-living insects, and many believe this is to promote genetic mixing. Members of different colonies are able to time-up their swarming by following environmental cues such as temperature, daylight, humidity and wind speed (high winds can be bad for business).

In addition to continuation of the species, scientists have discovered that the health of many breeds of social insects depends upon their proximity to their packs. For example, Mormon crickets rely on their groups for safety, and in a 2005 experiment (where some individuals were separated from the group and set loose on their own) within two days, 50-60% of the loners were dead - compared with 0 deaths among those who remained with the pack.

Beyond survival, pack proximity also seems to play an important role in the development of some species. In a 2012 report, it was revealed that cockroaches, like misery, love company, and when left alone, they can suffer from a variety of maladies including delays in molting and difficulties with mating.

Cockroaches also enjoy communicating with each other, and they sometimes do it with their poo. Exuding chemicals called cuticular hydrocarbons, they often mix these with their feces to leave a "scent trail" for their compatriots to follow back to a food source [think about that the next time you see a cockroach on the kitchen counter]. These chemicals also help individuals identify fellow members of their bands, so they can distinguish their pack's poopy trails from all of the others. - Melissa

Where New York City's Most Notorious Speeding Ticket Cameras Are Hiding

New York City obviously doesn't tell citizens where its speed cameras are, but using data on the tickets police issued last year, WNYC tracked down the location of the most absurd traps, including the city's $2.75 million cash machine.

The data shows that about half on New York's 51 cameras sit in fixed spots, whereas the other half rove around. The screenshot above from comes from the interactive map on WNYC's website.

The most vicious ticketing camera sits on the Shore Parkway in Coney Island, which issued 55,000 $50 tickets last year. Another brutal camera is currently issuing tickets to eastbound drivers at Atlantic Avenue and Essex Street in Brooklyn.

For drivers, speed cameras are an infuriating enforcement tool. They're ostensibly designed to keep people safe by slowing traffic, but it's impossible to ignore that they've got the benefit of generating loads of revenue for local governments.

Sure, slowing drivers down has the benefit of saving lives, but that alone doesn't justify cameras. A recent case of doctored photo evidence in Washington DC shows that cameras are hardly infallible, and in Chicago, critics have called the placement of cameras unfair. In part, WNYC's report seems to support the camera critique: The three cameras that generate the most tickets are right off expressways on roadways completely closed to pedestrians.

You should probably slow down no matter what. But if any of those spots above are on your regular commute, go to WNYC and check the location of the cameras that could cost you. [WNYC via Twitter] - Mario Aguilar-, Gawker Media

Steps to a Great Apology

By Colin Shaw

Everyone makes mistakes. You charged for the wrong plan on a Customer’s mobile bill or sent an ‘Extra Small’ instead of a Medium on the Jacket a Customer ordered online. More serious mistakes could be that as a Doctor, you misdiagnosed a life threatening condition that results in serious consequences for your patient and his or her loved ones. We all make mistakes. What should you do when this happens?

When you make a mistake, it’s best to admit it and apologize immediately.

The 6 Steps to a Good Apology

So how do you recover from a mistake with your customers? The answer is best summarized in an article I read by Kerry O’Malley, called, “The Right Way to Admit You Made a Mistake in Business.” She gives us all a great list that includes:

  1. Act quickly. Sooner is always better than later.
  2. Apologize in person. It means more when you are physically present.
  3. Explain what happened. Give them the facts of the situation and avoid blame.
  4. Show how you are going to avoid the problem in the future. Mistakes are nothing if not opportunities in disguise.
  5. Apologize. Use the actual words, “I’m sorry.”
  6. Make restitution. If possible and appropriate, so what you can do to make it right. Be careful here, however, because sometime you can unwittingly do too much to compensate, which can undermine future loyalty.

The only other addition I might add to the list is for you to express how you feel about the mistake. Acknowledging your emotions is key to communicating with your customer. By being honest about how you feel about the mistake, you create a personal relationship that contributes to the Customer’s feelings of being important and “cared for.” The only time I would caution against this tactic is if you don’t feel like you are to blame and are have bitter feelings about the situation. As I have written before, these feelings will make the apology seem insincere and will lead to nothing good.

The strategy above works great for most businesses to business and business to customer relationships. It’s honest; it’s proactive, and it’s the best you can do in the situation. Most of all, it offers an opportunity for your customer to decide what to do and strengthens the relationship between you…most of the time anyway.

Why it’s Important to Apologize Even When it’s Difficult

The act of apologizing is difficult for some people because it makes them feel vulnerable. Feeling open can be scary and can drive some people to hide from the situation, avoiding the customer or client to avoid the feelings of vulnerability. While avoidance might or might not result in bad consequences for a business relationship (although I am certain that it will only be bad), it can have terrible repercussions on a medical career.

Medscape.com had an excellent article on why some patients don’t sue their doctors, even when they have a good case. To summarize the article, patients who sue are the ones where the doctor avoids them, denying them both an explanation and assurance that the problem will get fixed for the future. As you read before, these are both important parts of an apology in the above list. According to the article, many patients pursue litigation when denied these answers. Their goal, in many cases, is to get these answers, not to punish the physician. In many cases, an honest conversation between the physician and the patient or their family results in them not filing a lawsuit against the doctor to blame.

What is true no matter what the mistake and what the consequences, is that all of us realize that people all make mistakes. No one likes the consequences of their mistakes. No one relishes the thought of calling the client they have let down or the customer that is rightfully frustrated and explain that they are the one that is responsible. I can’t even imagine how a surgeon or doctor must feel when they realize their mistake resulted in a patient’s death.

Being proactive, however, with honesty is the best policy, no matter how distasteful it is. Most people can forgive a person for making a mistake. Few people, however, can forgive a person from blaming others, denying responsibility or covering up their errors. These actions create an emotional response that will not drive value for anyone concerned and will destroy trust in the Customer relationship.

Elton John said, “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.” In many ways, he is right. Difficult or not, it’s the right word when you made a mistake, followed by the other words that apply to the list for a good apology. Honesty is the best policy, and the only policy that gives you a chance for Customer retention.

Turkish warplanes crash in central province of Malatya, killing four

A file photo shows a Turkish Air Force F16 jet fighter preparing to take off from an air base in Bandirma, Balikesir province. (Reuters)

ANKARA - Two Turkish warplanes crashed during a training exercise on Tuesday in the central Turkish province of Malatya, killing all four crew, the military said.

Contact was lost with the RF-4E reconnaissance aircraft after they took off from Malatya air base on Tuesday evening for planned night training, a statement on the Chief of Staff's website said.

"Search operations were immediately started. At 2045 the wreckage of our two planes was discovered and unfortunately four pilots have been martyred," the statement added. There are still no reports about what caused the crash.

The planes came down in Akcadag district, more than 150 km (90 miles) north of the Syrian border, a military source told Reuters.

Turkey has the second largest armed forces in NATO and in recent years its fighter jets have played an active role in patrolling its troubled borders with neighboring Iraq and Syria. In 2012 the Syrian air force shot down a Turkish F-4 over the Mediterranean. - Reuters

Wisdom teeth may help treat eye disease

NEW YORK: Your wisdom teeth could hold the clue to treating diseases affecting the cornea, a major cause of blindness worldwide, says a new research.

"Stem cells from the dental pulp of wisdom teeth can be coaxed to turn into cells of the eye's cornea and could one day be used to treat corneal blindness," said the researchers.

"The findings indicate the wisdom teeth could become a new source of corneal transplant tissue made from the patient's own cells. Corneal blindness, which affects millions of people worldwide, is typically treated with transplants of donor corneas," explained senior investigator James Funderburgh, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

"Shortages of donor's cornea and rejection of donor's tissue do occur, which might result in permanent blindness. Our work is promising because using the patient's own cells for treatment could help us avoid these problems," said Funderburgh.

The researchers proved that stem cells of the dental pulp, obtained from routine human third molar, or wisdom tooth, could be turned into corneal stromal cells called keratocytes.

The team injected the engineered keratocytes into the corneas of healthy mice, where they integrated without any signs of rejection. They also used the cells to develop constructs of corneal stroma akin to natural tissue.

The study appeared in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine. - IANS

Fats are beneficial for health, here’s why!

If you ask a layman the benefits of eating fat, you’d probably be laughed at and delivered a long lecture of countless harm that fat can do to your body. Fats are bad in excess, we all know, but fats are essential and more precisely some specific fats are essential, is a topic lesser known and discussed among people.

Good fats and bad fats

Fats are good and they are also bad, it totally depends on what is the composition underlying the same. Trans fats are those fats, which are partially hydrogenated saturated fats. In simple terms, we may understand them by their solid state at room temperature and their sources of origin are from plants and animals. Technically, these fats have no double bonds present in their chemical structure. Trans fats are the result of a process of hydrogenation of the saturated fatty acid molecule.

Kinds of fatty acids

Fats have two kinds of fatty acids in them, the first type is Omega-3 fatty acids and the other one is Omega-6 fatty acids. Our body essentially requires both kinds of fatty acids, but Omega-6 fatty acids have been reported to be harmful for our body, in abundance. As trans fatty acids are rich in Omega-6, they are considered harmful for our health. The most recent findings about fat concentrations and health status have confirmed the belief that a proper balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is crucial for our health. Discussed below are the health benefits of fats.

Reduces risk of heart disease and stroke

Omega-3 has been found to reduce the occurrence of heart disease and stroke. Omega-3 fatty acids contained in saturated fats are found to be very effective due to their low LDL cholesterol level and high HDL cholesterol levels which are bad and good for the heart, respectively. HDL cholesterol containing saturated fats, such as egg fats and coconut oil, may reduce the risk of coronary heart diseases and regulate the level of insulin in your blood due to antioxidant properties.

Improves the immune system

Saturated fatty acids are found to be very effective in improving the immune response of your body as they are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory in nature.

Hydrates skin and eyes

The saturated fatty acids also help in improving the lubrication of your body as they prevent the dryness of your skin and eyes.

Controls cancer cell growth

Saturated fatty acids have been found to be carrying anti-cancerous properties as they are extremely effective in checking the growth of unwanted cell growth in any portion of the body. They are especially effective in some kinds of cancers such as pancreatic and prostate cancers. Researches show that trans fats containing Omega-6 fatty acids induce the risk of cancer and metastasis. Omega-6 fatty acids, just as important as Omega-3!

Aids proper functioning of the brain

Saturated fatty acids have been reported to be extremely effective in checking osteoporosis and aiding in proper functioning of the brain. As the brain is made up of cholesterol and essential fatty acids, any shortage of essential fatty acids may reduce the brain’s activity which covers all kinds of subconscious and conscious functions of the brain.

Improves fertility

Reproductive health is a major concern for both men and women; and in both, the reproductive hormones are made up of essential fats. Any condition of low intake of the essential fats may cause a problem of infertility in men and women, irregular cycles and menopause in female, and fluctuating male hormone levels in men.

Balances hormone levels in the blood

Essential fatty acids have been found to be enablers of the process of fat burning and inducers of the right metabolic rate in the body. In diabetics, they have also been found to be working as regulators of the blood sugar levels. Essential fats also cause a rapid muscle gain after strenuous exercise by balancing the hormone levels in the blood.

How to use a home blood pressure monitor

If you are a person living with hypertension, diabetes, have just had major surgery or simply a health junkie you have probably been advised to use a home blood pressure monitoring device to keep a check on your blood pressure levels throughout the day. Well, here is exactly how you should use it to get the most accurate readings.

What is it?

A home blood pressure monitor is an electronic sphygmomanometer (a machine that measures your blood pressure) that you can use in the comfort of your own home. The device is portable and small and usually runs on battery power. Used on one arm, an electronic blood pressure monitor works on the same principle as a sphygmomanometer and gives you electronic diastolic and systolic blood pressure readings. The first time you use one of these monitors it is best you learn how to use it correctly and interpret the readings accordingly.

How do you use it?

It is fairly easy to use one of these monitors. Here are the steps to getting the right readings.
1. Sit comfortably on a chair with your arm rested on a table or any other stable surface.
2. Strap the cuff on to either your left or right upper arm. Make sure you use the same arm for every reading as each arm will give you different readings.
3. Press the start button on the meter and allow it to pump air into the cuff . The machine will stop pumping air automatically once it can sense your pulse. At this point the cuff may feel tight or uncomfortable, know that this is normal and only momentary; soon the pressure will be released.
4. Once the final readings blink on the screen, note them down for future reference.
5. If you aren’t sure about the accuracy of the monitor you can take two readings one after the other and then calculate an average of the readings.

Precautions:

1. Do not take a blood pressure reading when you are anxious, angry, upset, have just walked or exerted yourself, if you have smoked or consumed caffine in the past 30 minutes, or have just had a heavy meal.
2. Avoid talking or moving while taking the reading as this can lead to higher than normal readings.
3. Do not be anxious about what results you might see as this can raise your blood pressure too.

Only Travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight. Food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Tips from ready.gov

Before:
Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit:

  • Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products.
  • Sand to improve traction.
  • Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.
  • Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.
More:
What to do before winter storms and extreme cold.

During:
Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack - a major cause of death in the winter. If you must shovel snow, stretch before going outside.

Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly.

Watch for signs of frostbite. These include loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.

Conserve fuel, if necessary, by keeping your residence cooler than normal. Temporarily close off heat to some rooms.

The Real Battle Apple Is Waging In Autos

By Phil LeBeau

Amid the speculation over whether or not Apple’s increased investment in autos could ultimately lead to an iCar, the folks getting worked up into a lather are overlooking the big battle Apple is currently facing in the auto industry.

Who wins your time behind the wheel?

The two primary players fighting for your time, attention and purchasing power behind the wheel are Apple (with Carplay) and Google (with Android Auto).

Guess what? These guys are just getting started.

“I’ve seen both systems displayed in a variety of vehicles and both are just scratching the surface in terms of market penetration,” said Mark Boyadjis, Sr. Analyst of Infotainment for IHS Automotive.

Ultimately, Apple and Google are fighting to be the system you use to stay connected in the car, at home and wherever you go with your phone. Think of your car as the last major untapped frontier when it comes to mobility and connectivity.

Phone Projection Taking Off

What Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are driving towards is greater penetration in the phone projection market within the auto industry. Phone projection means you take the capabilities of your phone and run them seamlessly through your car so that when you are driving or riding somewhere your phone capabilities are there for you.

“They want your eyes, your purchase intent and so many other things in the hour or two you are driving,” said Boyardjis.

HIS automotive estimates an estimated 600,000 vehicles worldwide were integrated with phone projection systems in 2014. Considering global auto sales last year topped 88 million vehicles, penetration of phone projection systems was a drop in the bucket.

That will change rapidly.

By 2017, 40 million vehicles will be connected to systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto according to Boyardjis. He sees that number skyrocketing to a projected 250 million cars running these type of operating systems in 2020.

“These systems are going to explode in popularity,” says Boyardjis.

Connected Behind the Wheel

As automakers start to incorporate autopilot and autonomous-drive systems into their new models, the big push in the industry will be selling you on the idea of staying connected behind the wheel.

Could Apple do far more to keep drivers connected than simply push advanced versions of CarPlay? You bet.

Google has said it has no interest in building vehicles, but with Apple it remains to be seen if vehicle manufacturing is in its future.

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Mercedes-Benz showed a concept car that incorporated touchscreen panels into doors, giving passengers an experience unlike any other when they are driving or riding somewhere.

The auto industry is on the verge of a major shake-up when it comes to the technology powering and connecting our cars.

Not surprisingly, Apple is one of those companies stirring thing up

Making Anxiety Pay Off

By George Anders

Many successful leaders radiate confidence in public, only to wrestle with private anxieties when no one else is watching. Such secret jitters aren't a character flaw -- and they might even be a source of strength -- says long-time social entrepreneur Liam Black.

I've known Liam since early 2012. He's funny and irreverent as a conference speaker; he's an even more captivating provocateur over the dinner table. After speaking at several leadership conferences organized by Wavelength, a UK ideas company that Liam cofounded, I couldn't help marvel at how smoothly he and his partners keep everything organized. If you'd asked me a month ago whether Liam ever got flustered, I would have said: "No!"

Guess again. "Worry is part of the process of creation," Liam writes in an intriguing new book that combines memoir, rueful stories -- and rock-solid advice. It's "The Social Entrepreneur's A to Z," published this month in the UK and presumably headed for global distribution later on. In it, Liam pulls back the curtain on some of the tougher moments in his career.

Take the time in the 1990s when, as head of Liverpool's Furniture Resource Center, Liam spent way too much money to design a beautiful new store. Big mistake. Everything was so elegant that his working-class customers felt out of place. No one bought anything. The debacle was a costly -- but vital -- way for him to learn an essential lesson: stay close to your customers and don't try to imagine what they want from afar.

Other missteps taught him the importance of hiring carefully and taking time to stay connected with his own family. Another crucial discovery, Liam admits: If feedback is the breakfast of champions, "I needed a full English every morning."

Nonprofits are particularly prone to operating with murky definitions of success, he observes. In the short turn, such evasions make it easier to proclaim that everything is going well, while ignoring breakdowns in service quality, financial discipline or even outright mission failure. Liam's advice: don't try to fool yourself. Gather the data that will tell you what you're doing right or wrong -- and then make the necessary changes. "If your feedback loop is not making you wince," he writes, "then it is not working."

Making mistakes can be painful, Liam acknowledges, but the consequences don't have to be catastrophic. Even when your worst anxieties come true, "you learn that you do survive," he observes. "If you've been acting with integrity and authenticity, then people by and large are forgiving."

Big Data, Walmart And The Future Of Retail

By Bernard Marr

“We want to know what every product in the world is. We want to know who every person in the world is. And we want to have the ability to connect them together in a transaction.” The words of Walmart’s CEO of global e-commerce in 2013.

Today, retail is driven by data and technology – whether we’re talking about bricks-and-mortar stalwarts or the upstart online-only giants such as Amazon and Ali Baba which have come to dominate.

Old-school, physical shops, stores and supermarkets were experimenting with data collection and analysis before the online boom. Loyalty cards, credit card records and customer feedback were all used to build a picture of who their customers were and what they wanted.

However the catastrophic effects on high street retail certainly spurred them on to find new ways to stay competitive, as well as leveraging advantages that real-world outlets have over virtual storefronts.

Walmart was, by revenue, the world’s largest company last year. It is the largest retailer in the world, employs over two million people and takes in $36 million dollars at its 4,300 US stores every day.

Their attempts to use data to predict customer behavior reportedly date back to at least 2004, when chief information officer Linda Dillman examined sales data after Hurricane Charley to determine what would be needed following the forecasted Hurricane Frances.

As well as the predictable increase in sales of flashlights and emergency equipment, the period saw a totally unexpected increase in demand for beer and strawberry Pop-Tarts. This data was used to inform stocking decisions, and led to strong sales.

This realization of the powers of predictive analysis eventually led to the creation of @WalmartLabs. Since its inception in 2011 it created the Big Fast Data Team with the purpose of finding pioneering uses for data in retail.

One recent development is the Social Genome project, which aims to increase the efficiency of advertising on social networks by guessing what products people are likely to want to buy, based on their conversations with friends. According to their blog its syntax analysis is sophisticated enough to tell from a conversation about “salt” whether the customer is speaking about the movie Salt, or the mineral.

The Shoppycat service suggests gifts that people might like to buy for their friends, based on their interests and Likes, and they also experiment with crowd-sourcing new products with Get On The Shelf. Proposed products are put before a voting public to determine whether they should be stocked by the chain nationally.

They have even developed their own search engine, Polaris, which used sophisticated semantic analysis to work out what a customer wants based on their search terms.

Of course, with the majority of their customers outside of their homes while interacting with their services, mobile is a key priority.

In-store navigation apps steer customers through the aisles to the products they need. Soon they will also suggest routes to the products that Walmart thinks they want based on their social media chatter.

Items can be scanned to provide the casual browser with information about the product, including customer reviews, and if a product isn’t in stock at the store you visit (you could have checked before you arrived!) you can get driving directions to the nearest one that has the product on the shelf.

Real-world retailers such as Walmart, Tesco and Target have shown they have the guts for the fight. But it will be a hard fight. Last year, the amount spent by the average UK consumer shopping online overtook the amount they spent shopping in the high street for the first time, and by 2018, the high street’s share is expected to have fallen to 33%.

However although the e-tailers may have managed to turn some of the bricks’n’mortar’s advantages against them – online execs gloat at the fact their customers use real world stores to try out products before ordering them online – other advantages are trickier to co-opt.

For example the huge number of stores and outlets owned by a company like Walmart or Tesco means they can offer services such as same-day delivery to a far bigger portion of the population.

Sales volumes, it has been discovered, can be subtly manipulated with data in the real world just as they can online. Experiments by UK-based retailer John Lewis involving tracking footfall of customers through stores has found placing salesmen near certain products can lead to a strong increase in sales, whereas their proximity to other products makes little difference. This allows shop managers to make tactical decisions about the placement of staff which have a demonstrable impact on the store’s revenue.

Cameras, as well as newer developments such as the iBeacon mean there are more ways than ever to measure and analyze the behaviour of customers. For example beacons inside mannequins have been used to beam details about the clothes being worn directly to a customer’s smart phone, as well as the directions to where they can find them on the shelves.

Last year Walmart installed lightbulbs manufactured by GE and containing Apple’s iBeacon technology in stores around the world, so although a company spokesman told the Huffington Post in 2013 that the company “doesn’t monitor shoppers in their stores”, that may be about to change.

Bricks and mortar retail has certainly realized that if it wants to compete with others who offer the same service, but without the need for the customer to leave their home, they have to be twice as innovative as their online rivals to stay in the game.

Walmart’s continued dominance of the retail market in the US at least shows there is still strong demand from customers for outlets that they can visit and collect their purchases from at their convenience, rather than having to wait for deliveries.

But the e-tailers are closing the gap fast. We don’t know what the picture will look like in 10 years’ time but the innovations driven by analytics and big data – as well as the continued pressure to drive prices lower – will likely be good for us as customers.

How a Cup of Coffee Can Build Your Business

By Chester Elton

Murlidhar Gupta says that he was sitting with a friend in a coffee shop near Venice when a man entered and ordered, “Two cups of coffee, one of them on the wall.’ The waiter gave him one cup and pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying ‘A Cup of Coffee.’ As they drank their coffee, other customers entered and did the same.

Says Gupta: “A few days later, while we were enjoying our coffee, a man poorly dressed entered. He looked at the wall and said, 'One cup of coffee from the wall.’ The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man left without paying. The waiter took a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dustbin.”

Gupta explained that the great respect shown for the needy by the inhabitants of this town made his eyes well up in tears.

It’s a terrific story, but it may seem a long way from our everyday work lives. And yet in my travels I get to work with a lot of organizations that give back in their own ways—from sponsoring little league teams to collecting for the local food bank. Capital One built a soccer field and a baseball diamond at its McLean, Virginia, headquarters and opened it up for community and employee use.

Besides improving worker health and building teamwork, it provided needed recreational space for the town. Our friends at Murphy Oil in El Dorado, Arkansas, have donated a whopping $50 million to fund college educations for all of the town’s high school graduates. Believe it or not, any student who has lived in El Dorado for at least four years can get a full-ride scholarship. This generosity has changed the entire community. More than 95 percent of the high school graduates now going to college (up from 60 percent just a few years ago).

The point is, most good organizations share something in common: They make a difference in their communities. And great organizations take it a step further—like this coffee shop, their get their customers and employees to help in the cause, creating a bond that transcends business.

Recently I was asked to give a workshop for the leaders of Texas Roadhouse at their annual conference. The team went to a luxurious resort in a warm locale, but the executives and managers didn’t sit by the pool. Hardly. They spent their only free day refurbishing a playground at a local military housing project, so soldier’s children could have a safe, fun place to play.

On a hot, humid day, thousands of employees painted, raked, repaired, set up new slides, and gave back in a hundred ways. As the employees toiled friendships formed that could never be created in a meeting hall. The camaraderie was palpable.

Does this type of service drive employee engagement and energy levels in an organization? You’d better believe it. I can assure you those leaders went back to their restaurants fired up knowing they work for a company that cares. After all, when we believe that what we do matters we embrace our work with greater passion and we are more productive. It is a win-win.

I’d love to hear how you or your organizations have made a difference in your communities, and what it meant to the esprit de corps of your workplace. After all, sometimes a simple cup of coffee can change a life.
