300,000 Chickens Killed By Attacks On Farm Alarm Systems

In South Carolina, 16 farms have fallen victim to attacks on chickens, leaving 300,000 birds dead in a two week period.

In the past two weeks, attacks at 16 South Carolina chicken houses have left over 300,000 chickens dead. Farmed chickens rarely live good lives, but these deaths were especially horrible: Someone with inside knowledge of the houses temperature alarm systems, slowly killed the chickens with heat and cold.

The criminals, who seemed to have expert knowledge about raising chickens, bypassed alarm systems that keep temperatures under control. "Those alarms also control the heat, air conditioning and ventilation units and notify farmers by cellphone when buildings get too hot or cold," reports the Charlotte Observer. The attackers knew whether to jack up the heat for older birds, which require cooler temperatures, or turn it off for chicks, which need more heat.

An employee at one of the farms described the scene for the Observer.

He said he noticed a large amount of steam coming from the sides and the roofs of the chicken houses when he arrived at work around 7 a.m. He immediately knew something was wrong.

When he walked into one of the chicken houses, he said it was like a sheet of white - almost like snow - that wasn't moving. The ventilation was shut off and the temperature inside the house was turned up to 115 degrees.

Officials told Reuters that revenge may be a motive. Not long before the spree of chicken killing started, Pilgrims Pride Corp, the country's largest poultry producer, laid off 60 workers at a South Carolina plant. The targeted chicken houses all raised animals for Pilgrims Pride.

The sheer scale of the carnage reflects the massive, automated world of chicken farming. It's still unclear exactly how the attacker or attackers bypassed the alarm systems, but killing chickens is apparently not just a low-tech crime.

All of the chickens killed were being raised for Pilgrim’s Pride, located in Colorado. The attacks cost farm operators a total of about $1.7 million. - Reuters

NASA Spacecraft Becomes First to Orbit a Dwarf Planet

Ceres is seen from NASA's Dawn spacecraft on March 1, just a few days before the mission achieved orbit around the previously unexplored dwarf planet. The image was taken at a distance of about 30,000 miles (about 48,000 kilometers).

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft successfully entered Ceres' orbit early on Friday, making history as the first mission to achieve orbit around a dwarf planet.

Dawn was approximately 38,000 miles from Ceres when it was captured by the dwarf planet’s gravity at about 4:39 a.m. PST (7:39 a.m. EST) Friday.

Ceres, which lies between Mars and Jupiter, is 310 million miles from Earth.

Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California received a signal from the spacecraft at 5:36 a.m. PST (8:36 a.m. EST) that Dawn was healthy and thrusting with its ion engine, the indicator Dawn had entered orbit as planned.

"Since its discovery in 1801, Ceres was known as a planet, then an asteroid and later a dwarf planet," said Marc Rayman, Dawn chief engineer and mission director at JPL. "Now, after a journey of 3.1 billion miles (4.9 billion kilometers) and 7.5 years, Dawn calls Ceres, home."

In addition to being the first spacecraft to visit a dwarf planet, Dawn also has the distinction of being the first mission to orbit two extraterrestrial targets. From 2011 to 2012, the spacecraft explored the giant asteroid Vesta, delivering new insights and thousands of images from that distant world. Ceres and Vesta are the two most massive residents of our solar system’s main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The most recent images received from the spacecraft, taken on March 1 show Ceres as a crescent, mostly in shadow because the spacecraft's trajectory put it on a side of Ceres that faces away from the sun until mid-April. When Dawn emerges from Ceres' dark side, it will deliver ever-sharper images as it spirals to lower orbits around the planet.

"We feel exhilarated," said Chris Russell, principal investigator of the Dawn mission at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). "We have much to do over the next year and a half, but we are now on station with ample reserves, and a robust plan to obtain our science objectives."

Dawn's mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital ATK Inc., in Dulles, Virginia, designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Italian Space Agency and Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team. - Nasa

7 Brain Functions We May Soon Control

While you think most of the behavior, moods and feelings you have are something you control, much of it is beyond our ability and is in fact involuntary reactions in our brains. Luckily scientists have been hard at work investigating neurons, and whether some of them can be controlled, like the on and off of light switches.

Thirst

The hypothalamus area of the brain controls thirst and inquiring neuroscientists at Colombia University identified two sets of neurons relating to hydration. Via experiments with mice, the scientists activated these neurons. They found that the mice became extremely thirsty despite being adequately hydrated, and the inverse happened when the second neuron was activated: they failed to drink despite not being properly hydrated.

Hunger

Like with thirst, scientists at John Hopkins University wanted to see if hunger could be controlled. After locating the neurons responsible for eating impulse, these researchers activated and blocked these neurons in mice. They had similar results to their Colombia University peers, with the mice overeating despite being full and showing no interest in food despite having real hunger. This discovery has tremendous relevance for eating disorders and weight control.

Consciousness

It seems consciousness and awareness go hand in hand. While researchers at George Washington University were stimulating a woman’s claustrum (a passage of neurons in the cerebrum), they unintentionally caused her to lose consciousness but not fall asleep. The result was puzzling as the patient was awake but remained stationary, not responding to any stimuli and had no memory of this time when she regained consciousness. Similarly, through other studies it’s been shown that the humans can switch off their self-awareness when stressed. It has also been observed that when forced to focus on deadlines, the cortex ushers in a robotic like mode of consciousness.

Pain

While pain can be dulled and eased with drugs, there is the drawback of nasty side effects. Through their work trying to alleviate chronic pain researchers at St. Louis University found that activating the A3 adenosine receptor in either the brain or the spinal cord of rodents allowed for pain to be successfully blocked.

Violence

Neuroscientists at New York University manipulated neurons associated with violence in mice. The team effectively transformed mice into violent aggressors and then placated them into peaceful creatures. Interestingly the team also found that the neurons relating to violence overlap with neurons relating to sex, and that sex would temporarily curb the mice’s need for violence.

Habits

Neuroscientists working with rats discovered that there are neurons associated with forming habits and that these could also be controlled. Experiments set up in mazes allowed the rats to be cured of repetitive habits. While at present this is not transferable to humans, there is value in further research down this avenue for future habit curtailing treatments.

Depression, Parkinson’s, and Possibly Alzheimer’s

The University of Toronto neurosurgeon Andres Lozano has been using electricity to trigger misfiring neurons to work and curb abnormal neurons from firing. He has been using this method to treat depression and shaking in Parkinson’s. Presently Lozano has launched a clinical trial for mild Alzheimer’s sufferers to see if electrical stimulation works with rejuvenating memory and cognitive decline. The results will be released in a few months. It’s exciting to know the ways scientists are researching our brains and to hear about the possibilities that await us in the future.

Is Garlic Good For You? 7 Surprising Benefits Of Garlic For Optimal Health

The smelly superfood is more than just a spice; the natural medicinal ingredient can treat hair loss and the common cold. Victoria Rachitzky Hoch, CC BY 2.0

Garlic does more than just invigorate your palate and ward off vampires; it’s also a smelly superfood health aid. The spice is a highly nutritious vegetable with very few calories, containing trace amounts of other nutrients that contribute to its universal status of a powerful, beneficial healer. The natural medicinal ingredient, both as a fresh plant and supplement, can strengthen immune function and boost overall well-being.

Garlic’s delicious flavor and health benefits have led to a steady increase in demand. The average garlic consumption per capita per year is 2 pounds. A healthy adult can safely consume up to four cloves of garlic each day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, with each one weighing about a gram.

The body-strengthening effects of this herb are thought to be due to its active ingredient allicin. This is what gives garlic its distinctive taste and smell. Whether you take your garlic powdered, salted, or minced or in supplement form, you can reap the surprising benefits of this multipurpose herb for optimal health.

1. Treats Acne

This herb may not be found in acne products’ list of ingredients, but it can serve as a natural topical treatment to get rid of blemishes. Allicin, the organic compound in garlic, has the ability to stop the damaging effects of radicals and kill bacteria, according to a 2009 study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie. In its decomposed form — sulfenic acid — allicin produces a fast reaction with radicals, which makes it a valuable herb for treating acne scars, skin diseases, and allergies.

2. Treats Hair Loss

A head full of hair that smells like garlic could help in the treatment of hair loss. The herb’s extremely high sulfur content contains keratin, the protein hair is made of. This stimulates fortification and growth. A 2007 study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venerology and Leprology found the use of a garlic gel added to the therapeutic efficacy of topical betamethasone valerate for alopecia areata treatment can be effective to induce hair re-growth.

3. Fights Common Cold

Garlic’s allicin can serve as a health aid during times of illness. Rene Ficek, a registered dietician and a lead nutrition expert at Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating in Illinois told Medical Daily in an email: “Garlic cloves contain a healthy dose of allicin, but you may still need a few cloves per day to feel the effects.” However, garlic supplementation can also be used to ward off viruses.

A 2001 study published in the journal Advances In Therapy found a daily garlic supplement can reduce the number of colds by 63 percent compared to not taking supplements. Moreover, the average length of cold symptoms was also reduced to 70 percent, from five days in the control group to 1.5 days in garlic supplement group. These findings suggest the allicin-containing supplement has a protective effect against the common cold.

4. Lowers Blood Pressure

A garlic supplement a day may help keep your blood pressure at bay. Its active compounds can significantly reduce blood pressure comparable to the effects of prescribed drugs. Aged garlic extract between 600 to 1,500 milligrams (mg) was found to be just as effective as the drug Atenolol prescribed for hypertension in a 24-week period, according to a 2013 study published in the Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Garlic is believed to activate the production of the endothelium-derived relaxation factor, according to Ficek, due to the herb’s high amount of polysulfides — sulfur — containing molecules. This leads to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), following the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the vessel wall. Garlic supplements can achieve these effects efficiently without the bad breath compared to raw garlic.

5. Lowers Heart Disease Risk

Garlic can help lower the risk of heart disease by lowering total LDL cholesterol. A 2000 study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found the effect of garlic on total cholesterol level in people with elevated levels moderately reduced cholesterol levels. Vandana Sheth, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics told Medical Daily in an email that this is achieved by “diminishing the activity of main cholesterol-producing enzyme in the liver.” Garlic supplements can enhance the body’s ability to dissolve blood clots that would otherwise increase the risk of heart attacks by closing the arteries.

6. Enhances Physical Performance

Garlic can help increase exercise capacity and reduce exercise-induced fatigue. “[G]arlic has a long history of being used in ancient cultures to reduce fatigue and enhance the work capacity of laborers,” Ficek said. Garlic oil has been shown to improve the exercise capacity of people with heart disease. A 2005 study published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology found participants with heart disease who took garlic oil for six weeks saw a reduction in peak heart rate by 12 percent. This was accompanied by an improvement in their physical endurance during a treadmill exercise.

7. Improves Bone Health

The alkalizing vegetable is filled with bone-healthy nutrients such as zinc, manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. Risa Groux, a holistic nutritionist and ChazzLIVE expert told Medical Daily in an email: “Garlic is really high in manganese, which contains enzymes and antioxidants that facilitates the formation of bones and connective tissues, bone metabolism, and calcium absorption.”

Garlic may help reduce bone loss through the increase of estrogen in females. A 2007 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found garlic oil was able to preserve the skeletal health of rodents when under a hypogonadal situation. In other words, garlic contains nutrients that act as building blocks for healthy, strong bones.

Garlic can be a flavorful addition to your dish and also double as a valuable aid to your health.

Oral swabs could be new frontier in TB diagnosis

A STAFFER IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, COLLECTS A PATIENT'S SWAB SAMPLE

Washington, March 3 (IANS): Easy-to-obtain oral swab samples can significantly improve diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), new research has found.

Detecting the disease with a simple oral swab "could be a game changer for TB control because it could make diagnosis cheaper and easier," said Gerard Cangelosi, professor at the University of Washington.

Diagnosing TB conventionally involves collecting and testing a person's sputum - thick, gluey mucus coughed up from the lungs.

Working with sputum samples is challenging due to the material's "horribly gloppy" nature, as Cangelosi called it.

Sputum can hide pathogens from pathologists because it is difficult to dislodge bacteria from within the mucus' milieu, the study noted.

In search of a viable alternative to sputum samples, the scientists swabbed the mouths of 20 healthy individuals and 20 TB patients.

Samples from patients with confirmed TB were taken in a clinic in South Africa. The control samples were taken from healthy individuals in Washington state.

Lisa Jones-Engel , a research scientist at the University of Washington National Primate Research Center, advised the study team in applying the oral-swab method to human disease.

The researchers detected TB in oral swabs taken from 18 of the 20 confirmed patients. None of the samples from healthy volunteers tested positive.

Previous efforts to test for TB in materials other than sputum, such as blood, urine or exhaled breath, have been limited by much lower accuracy, with detection rates typically below 50 percent, the study featured in the journal Scientific Reports, pointed out.

Early Warning Signs for 9 Types of Cancer

Early diagnosis will often significantly raise the success rate in the battle against cancer. However, many cancer symptoms are also common in other illnesses, leading doctors to initially diagnose these illnesses instead of the cancer. By the time you’re done with this article, you’ll have gotten to know the nine major cancer symptoms, which should be your warning signs, helping you catch the cancer early and saving your life, or that of your loved ones.

Note: Of course, the first thing to do when encountering these persistent symptoms is to contact a doctor immediately.

1. Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is considered to be one of the deadliest forms of cancer in the western world, and manifests as growths in the lining of the colon and/or rectum. When diagnosed early enough, the success rate for treatments is very high. Adopting a healthy, active lifestyle and fiber-rich diet, as well as avoiding alcohol and processed meat can reduce the likeliness of developing this type of cancer.

Blood in the stool
The appearance of blood in the stool may indicate other stomach and intestinal illnesses, but also as a warning sign of colon cancer. If you find fresh blood in your stool, or have black stool, even in small amounts should not be ignored and a physician should be consulted.

Unusually fast or slow bowel movements
When your digestive system doesn’t work properly, it can lead to chronic diarrhea or constipation – a possible sign of colon cancer. If your bowel movements are not normal for a period of several weeks, or doesn’t respond to medical treatment, it may serve as a warning sign for cancer.

Other symptoms:
Severe stomachaches
Lumps in your stomach
Unexplained loss of weight
 2. Ovarian Cancer
This type of cancer attacks the ovarian tissues and is mostly common with women over the age of 50, but can also appear in younger women. The reasons for contracting this type of cancer are not very well known. The known factors are genetic, avoiding getting pregnant, and fertility treatments.

Indigestion
Symptoms such as bloating, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and gas can be indicative of ovarian cancer. Since many women experience these kinds of sensitivities in their digestive system, people rarely attribute it to cancer. This is why it’s important to have these symptoms checked, if only to rule out cancer.

Other symptoms:
Loss of appetite or feeling full quickly
Pelvic and lower-back pains
Frequent urination
Abnormal vaginal bleeding after menopause
Lethargy

3. Skin Cancer
Skin cancer often attack the surface of the skin, which later metastasize into other parts of the body. The main cause of this type of cancer is unprotected exposure to sunlight, and in farer-skinned individuals in particular.

A change in the shape, size or color of moles or beauty marks
Most moles and beauty marks are benign, but some may indicate the presence of skin cancer. New moles and beauty marks, ones that change their color, shape or size in a short time (weeks/months), or a change in texture to brittle/greasy/bloody – are all symptoms of skin cancer. Even if you don’t feel like having them checked, it’s important to keep an eye on them, because anyone is susceptible. Early diagnosis can save your life, even in cases of malignant melanoma.

Skin sores that don’t heal after a couple of weeks
Our skin has the ability to repair damages it experiences, but in some cases, such lesions and sores don’t heal for weeks. This must serve as a warning, so if you notice such sores on your skin, contact your GP immediately.

The appearance of spots or a change in the texture of the skin
If you notice new spots on your body, or have ones you’ve never checked, as well as a change in their color and texture, must be tested since they can be a warning sign of cancer.

4. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer usually starts as a small, painless lump(s) in the breasts, and will later metastasize into the rest of the body. Diagnosing breast cancer quickly increases the survival rate considerably. Breast cancer is mostly common in women over the age of 50, but can appear in any woman of any age. It is also possible for men to contract, but these cases are very rare.

Abnormal lumps or swelling of the breasts
The most common symptoms of breast cancer are the appearance of lumps, swellings or endema. They may not be painful, but should be looked at by a doctor nonetheless.

Inflammation, lumps and dimples on the breasts
Visible changes such as inflammation, bumps or dimples on the breasts could be indicative of cancer. Even if you think that the symptoms are barely noticeable, don’t ignore them – if it truly is breast cancer, early discovery can save your life.

Nipples: change in location / inflammation / secretions
If the skin of your nipple changes texture or becomes brittle, if it becomes inflamed, swollen, its shape changes and its location does as well (flattening or sinking of the nipple), or secretions are common indicators of breast cancer. If the symptoms don’t disappear after a while, consult with your physician.

Other symptoms:
Chronic pain in the breasts or armpits
Uneven, inflamed blood vessels
Swelling of the armpits or the collar bone
Sores on the breasts

5. Lung Cancer
This deadly cancer is common in both women and men and leads to the formation of growths in the lungs, destroying them. The most common cause of this cancer is first and second-hand smoking of tobacco products.

Shortness of breath
Do you feel like you’re out of breath more often, even when you’re resting, or that you’re constantly wheezing, it may indicate lung cancer. If the shortness of breath a result of an airways infection that doesn’t respond to medication, it can also be a warning sign.

Chronic cough or bloody cough
Coughing on its own is a common thing, especially during and after a cold or the flu. If your coughing continues for 3 weeks or longer, or gets worse, it should serve as a warning sign. Even if you’re in good health, but the cough persists, it may indicate lung cancer. If you cough blood, even in small amounts, consult your physician immediately.

Other symptoms:
Sharp pain in the chest or shoulder when taking a deep breath
Swelling in the neck, particularly in the lymph nodes
Difficulty swallowing
Lethargy
6. Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer appears as growths in the lining of the stomach, which later spreads to the lymph nodes and the organs that are in close proximity to the stomach. The causes for this cancer are unknown, though some experts claim it’s a result of consuming preservatives. This type of cancer is more common in people 65 years of age and over.

Drastic, unintentional weight-loss
We may experience weight fluctuations throughout our lives, planned or otherwise. However, if you experience a drastic loss of weight when you haven’t changed your lifestyle may indicate stomach cancer.

Chronic indigestion
Indigestion can occur quite often and for various reasons, but when it’s accompanied by intense pain, happens spontaneously (without any explanation), or chronic indigestion could be symptoms of stomach cancer. It’s important to inform your physician of these symptoms.

Other symptoms:
Blood in the stool or black stool
Nausea and sickness
General lack of apatite

7. Cancer of the Mouth
Growths in the oral cavity, on the tongue, lips and gums, as well as the saliva gland and tonsils are common in cases of mouth cancer. If it metastasizes, this cancer will damage the lymphatic system, as well as your head and lungs. It’s more common in men than women who are over 40. Quitting cigarettes and reducing alcohol consumption can drastically decrease the risk of contracting it.

Mouth or tongue ulcers that last for more than three weeks
Many people experience the occasional mouth ulcer, which can be caused by stress, changes in the weather or a compromised immune system. In cases where such ulcers don’t heal after three weeks, they may be symptomatic of mouth cancer.

Other symptoms:
Red or white spots in the oral cavity
Unexplained pain in the mouth or ears
Unexplained lump in the throat
Intense sore throat
Hoarseness and trouble swallowing
Oral swelling and bleeding
Color changes in the lips, gums, tongue and inner cheeks
8. Throat Cancer
Growths on the vocal chords and the lining of the throat are symptomatic of throat cancer, and can spread to the esophagus, neck, and lymph nodes. Changing to a healthy lifestyle, quitting cigarettes and alcohol can drastically reduce the risk of developing this type of cancer.

Lumps or swelling in the neck that last more than three weeks
Any inflammation or lumps you notice that last more than three weeks can by a symptom of throat cancer. Whether or not the swelling/lumps are painful or not, or whether they’re big or small, you will want to contact your physician.
Hoarseness

Pain in the esophagus and trouble swallowing
When we swallow our food, it goes through our esophagus on its way to the stomach. If you are having difficulties swallowing your food, or feel pain while doing so, or feel that the food has gotten stuck in esophagus and won't go on - you should immediately check the issue with your doctor.

Other symptoms:
Chronic vomiting
A chronic cough or coughs with blood
Unexplained loss of weight

9. Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for men, especially those of age 70 and above. This cancer is in ifact a malignant tumor in the prostate gland, which belongs to the male's reproductive system and is located close to the bladder.

Difficulties peeing

One of the most common problems of aging in men is having problems peeing. However, this is also a common symptome of prostate cancer and so such problems should not be ignored just because you are of a certain age. Problems like giving urine frequently or trouble pushing it out or not being able to hold it - are major symptoms of this cancer.

Other symptoms:
Blood in the urine
A burning sensation while peeing
Blood in the semen

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge vs Galaxy Note Edge: A Detailed Comparison news

After the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge on Sunday the monopoly of a curved screen phone was taken away from the Samsung Note Edge and trust me it was snatched away hard from the Note. Apart from the dual curved edges and the all metal and glass body on the S6 Edge there is a lot that seperates these phones.

Design:

The Samsung Galaxy S6 outcasts it's predecessor in every aspect in matters of build quality and design. It's seamlessly designed metal and and glass body and the dual curved edges is more aesthetically designed for looks as well as functionality.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge In Pictures

Coming down to dimensions the Note Edge is 5.96 x 3.24 x 0.33 inches. While the S6 Edge is 5.59 x 2.76 x 0.28 inches making it a device more convenient to handle. Also, the Note Edge weighs 174gms whereas the S6 Edge weighs only 132gms.

The casing of the S6 Edge is complete Aluminium and Glass while we do see the use of plastic in the Note Edge. The Note Edge has a stylus while the S6 Edge lacks a stylus.
