Sharjah flight diverts landing minutes before touchdown

Oil spill on runway forces pilot to divert plane to Ras Al Khaimah airport

Sharjah: An Air Arabia flight diverted its landing destination minutes before touchdown at Sharjah airport on June 8 due to an oil spillage on the runway.

The pilot was descending the plane when he suddenly took off again minutes before landing in Sharjah after noticing a number of airport personnel crowding the runway.

The flight, which was heading to Sharjah from Amman, Jordan took off at 10:50pm (Jordan time) on June 7, and was scheduled for landing at 2:50am on June 8 at Sharjah airport.

The plane began descending and was prepared for landing before its scheduled arrival time, however, it finally landed in Sharjah more than an hour and a half later.

Passengers were first told that due to an emergency inspection on the runway the flight would be diverted to Ras Al Khaimah airport.

Minutes later, the pilot announced that the delay was due to an oil spillage on the runway and that safety in this situation is the pilot's main concern. The oil leakage was said to have come from another parked aircraft.

At the Ras Al Khaimah airport, passengers were told to stay seated during an estimated half an hour wait. The delay at Ras Al Khaimah airport was over an hour long.  During the delay, the plane was refuelled as it awaited clearance from the Air and Traffic Control (ATC) to take off.

Passengers remained clam but were unhappy with the inconvenience.

Meanwhile, the Sharjah runway was closed for over an hour, delaying all departures and arrivals to and from Sharjah.

The Air Arabia flight finally took off from Ras Al Khaima at 4:15am on a short 11 minute flight to the neighbouring emirate. - gulfnews
