If you are pre-disposed to glaucoma, you cannot do too much about it. However, with regular checkups, you can detect it early and with lifelong treatment, prevent blindness.
The general guidelines for a glaucoma check-up - Once every two to four years before age 40, once every one to three years from ages 40-54, once every one or two years from age 55 to 64, once every six to 12 months after age 65.
If you have a family history of glaucoma, Higher spectacle numbers (more than -4 or +4), usage of certain eye medications (like steroids) for a long time without doctor’s supervision, usage of steroids for a long time for any auto-immune or kidney disease, an old eye injury or a history of diabetes and/or hypertension, you are more at risk for developing glaucoma and should start with checkups every six to 12 months even before the age of 35.
